I had some injections recommended as I'm travelling to Taiwan in the near future. The jabs nurse OK'd the jabs as suitable for someone with RA on all the meds I'm on and the vaccines weren't live. I had typhoid in one arm and diptheria, tetanus & polio in the other. I have really bad pain in both upper arms and shoulders and now most of my other joints seem to be flaring too. Has anyone else had a similar experience after vaccinations. Thanks from Naomi, X

Hi Naomi,

I am not certain about this but I think the polio vaccine is live.
I was due for a tetanus booster a couple of years ago but my GP said they don't have tetanus vaccine on it's own any more in the surgery, it has diphtheria and polio added so I couldn't have it while I am on mtx.
Might be worth ringing your rheumy nurse on Monday.

Hi Naomi, I can remember feeling like this when I had my first flu jab and after my hep B jabs when I was working. I also may be wrong but when my children had their polio vaccines at school I queried about the polio being a live vaccine as I was on mtx and the school nurse told me they are not live anymore.

Bevxx

PS I have just found an article on the nras website called immunisations and ra which might be helpful.

I've just googled the polio vaccine and Bev is right, it's inactivated now.
Perhaps giving them all at once is just too much for you Naomi and has triggered a flare.
Ring your rheumy nurse on Monday but if you start to feel worse over the weekend it would be worth getting in touch with NHS direct.
Hope you feel better soon.

Ooooh owwww Naomi sounds owchy!

The immune trigger by the vaccine gives you immunity so it has potential to annoy the ra.
The live vAccines are the ones to watch for. I think yellow fever is a live one.
But the thing to do is ring the rheumatology nurses.

My uncle is retiring at the end of the month, he and my aunt are off on some cruises.
He's just had to have yellow fever and he's felt dreadful after it!
He doesn't have ra

But his joints ached etc.
Perhaps it's the vaccines effect themselves?

Thanks for the replies everyone. I'm glad to say that the flare only lasted a couple of days and I'm feeling so much better now. I hope everyone else is doing OK. Naomi, X
